Neither parents nor the children are to blame for the wet bed.Bedwetting comes in two common forms:
In primary nocturnal enuresis bedwetting occurs from birth without any long dry periods. This is not poor parenting, and nor is it a developmental disorder afflicting the bedwetter. It is simply a normal variant of human growth and learning. Neither the parents nor the child are to blame for the situation. If the child continues to wet the bed after the age of five and after a prolonged dry period, (secondary enuresis) the trigger is often psychological. Causes may be the birth of a sibling or trouble in the family. Among the causes of primary enuresis several factors are now considered to be involved, including delayed maturation of the sleep-awake switch in the brain stem. About 2/3 of enuresis cases differ in the degree to which bedwetting children can be roused from sleep as opposed to non-bedwetting children. In studies in the sleep laboratory, attempts were made to wake bedwetting children by loud noises through headphones. Despite 120 decibels being equivalent to a Harley Davidson running at full speed through the bedroom, only 9.3% of the children were woken by that noise. In colloquial language, bedwetters may be called deep sleepers with a “wake-up disorder”. They do not, however, sleep more deeply than a non-bedwetter. In non-bedwetters, the stimulus of a full bladder is normally suppressed by the central nervous system or is responded to by waking up. In bedwetters, these reactions do not take place consistently. This is where the training with Enutrain comes in. |
